The largest natural habitat for the famed and rare one-horned rhinoceros, Kaziranga National Park is one of the oldest in India. It is also a tiger reserve, and has quite a sizeable population of elephants, wild buffalo and swamp deer. The Park is a birding paradise too and with over 450 species of birds, the park can be compared avifauna population of the Corbett National Park. The park is well-defined by tall elephant grass, open woodlands, numerous streams and a number of lakes. Tea plantations near the entrance of the park can also be visited. Hire a jeep or elephant safari and explore the exciting world of the wild.

• Animal life: The first and foremost attraction of the Park is the one-horned rhino and spotting this majestic animal would surely be an experience of a lifetime. The excitement is enhanced by the fact that these rare beasts can be found only here! Other animals that you would see here are wild buffalos, hoolock gibbons and swamp deer, together with sloth bears, Indian elephants, bison, hog deer, leopard cats & tigers.

• Bird life: Kaziranga is a paradise for bird-watchers, considering its vast population of migratory birds, water birds, predators, scavengers and game birds. Some rare migratory birds which have made this park their home are lesser white-fronted goose, ferruginous ducks, black-necked stork and Asian openbill. Kaziranga was also housed seven species of vultures, out of which only three survived extinction. Carry a pair of strong binoculars to view these birds!

• Reptiles: Two of the largest snakes in the world, the reticulated python and rock python, are the royal residents of this park. Even the longest venomous snake in the world, the king cobra dwells here. Along with other varieties of crawly creatures, Kaziranga has quite a variety of turtles and tortoise within the park.

• Plantations: The area around the park has quite a number of coffee, tea and rubber plantations and make for popular picnic and outing spots.

• Kakochang Waterfalls: These waterfalls are located in Jorhat district and are a pleasant spot for picnic and day outings.

• Elephant Safari: This is undoubtedly the most interesting and alluring way to explore the park. Hire an elephant and mahout who would know the terrain and help you recognize calls of the wild and allow you to get close to the majestic animals.

• Jeep Safari: This is another option to explore the park, and you can hire a jeep and guide from the park entrance.

The only eating options in Kaziranga are the restaurants attached to the hotels and resorts in the Park and you’re likely to get a large option of Bengali cuisines. The Bon Habi Jungle Resort has a fine multi-cuisine restaurant which specializes in ethnic dishes. Wild Grass is another great eating option in Kaziranga. They serve a range of authentic Assamese dishes as well as Chinese and Continental. The Kolhora Highway has a number of small dhabas ready with local snacks like samosas and mithai and their regular rice-dal-roti meals.
